Close call, O’Grady. Way too close. If Emily Ingram hadn’t come along at precisely that moment, Shaun wasn’t sure he could have resisted the impulse to kiss Brooke. And the look in her eyes had told him she’d felt it, too.

Then he’d seen her wince at Emily’s use of the word general, and his heart about snapped. The woman was struggling, that much was clear. Ten more minutes alone with her during Kent’s “forced proximity” ploy the other day, and she might have revealed more about the things that troubled her.

Oh, well, time to get started on the second coat of paint in the rec hall. Maybe this afternoon he could arrange to work on the other side of the room from Brooke’s father. The man was nice enough, but his overprotective streak came through loud and clear. All morning long, he’d plied Shaun with ambiguously worded questions disguised as friendly getting-to-know-each-other conversation. Where had Shaun grown up? Had he always wanted to be a missionary? Any marital aspirations? Where did he see himself in the next five years?

In other words, What are your intentions toward my daughter?

He should have come right out and told the man there was no chance of anything between him and Brooke. Shaun would soon be on a plane to the Middle East, and Brooke...

No, it wasn’t his place to suggest to her father that she didn’t seem happy in Juniper Bluff, nor that he suspected she might decide to head back to LA first chance she got.

It wasn’t Shaun’s place to care one way or the other. So why did he? What was it about Brooke Willoughby that continually flashed those Caution! Detour! signs he was determined to ignore?

“There you are, Shaun.” Kent found him behind the rec building as he stalled longer than necessary stirring a paint can. “Sorry I couldn’t get here sooner. Looks like things are humming along.”

“It’s going well.” Straightening, Shaun used an old rag to wipe a dribble of paint off his hand. “Have you had a chance to check out those washing machines?”

“That’s what I was coming out to tell you. They’re definitely fixable, but I’d have to order some parts.” He grimaced. “It’ll run a lot less than buying new appliances, but it won’t be cheap. Before I place the order, you should check with Emily to see if there’s room in the committee’s budget.”

Shaun nodded. He knew how it worked in situations like this, but these families needed their laundry facilities. “Go ahead and order the parts, and we’ll cover the amount one way or another.” Even if he had to dig into his own savings to make up the difference.

“Will do. Wish I could stick around longer, but Erin reminded me we’d scheduled another premarital counseling session with Pastor Terry this afternoon.” He blew out through pursed lips. “I am beyond ready to get past all this wedding to-do and get on with the happily married part.”

“Two more weeks and you’re there.” Shaun clapped Kent on the shoulder.
